I never quite finished posting the Do It Yourself Arabic Alphabet Lessons from 2008! These are kind of  revamping, but for the little bunch………

My four year old is back on learning the letters and so I’ve finally finished a routine/sequence of lessons that I’ll be sharing here, insha Allah.



Alphabet Recognition only of all Arabic alphabet letter (isolated forms only); writing tracing/can be done, but is not expected to be mastered or dealt with in a comprehensive way in this course of study.

Suggested for:

Preschoolers, Kindergartners; pre/early writers

What Will You Need?

This method does not depend on a lot of pre prepared materials, but you can use some to save time. However, I strongly recommend not using a lot of prepared materials except where indicated as I believe generating drills and visuals while student is looking seems to help student remember the concepts better rather than just pulling out a prepared worksheet (just my opinion). However, in some cases, it would be too cumbersome to write out a worksheet while student looks on.

For materials that are to be generated (mainly the drills) in student’s presence, I provide instructions.

Basic Materials List

· Alphabet Reciting Chart

Chart with all the letters in alphabetical order (See charts here in Arabic Alphabet section, or at the main TJ site, or make your own).

· Alphabet Cards (for a flashcard deck)

One for each letter of the alphabet. Number the cards in order (alif = 1, baa = 2, etc).

You can make your own or download some pretty ones from ‘s Arabic section.

· Printable Gameboards, blank

You can find several blank gameboards online. Try to use several different styles to keep child’s interest.

· Progress Chart

One is available from TJ’s Arabic Alphabet Page (at the main site) or you can make your own. Use a chart where student can color in each letter as it is learned.

Daily Routine

The daily lessons will follow one of two routes, depending upon student’s progress:

Path A

(New learning will take place)

Path B

(student not ready to go onto new letters)

Based upon daily assessment in step two, you can decide whether you need to follow Path A or Path B for the day. Always be prepared to take up Path A for any given day, but don’t be afraid to take Path B if student is clearly not ready to go on.


This is a basic “program” and pretty much follows the same daily pattern. You can spiff it up as you wish, but it gives you a basic, regular routine to work with, plus offers suggestions for extra activities. 


Lesson Breakdown

Lesson 1: alif, baa, taa, thaa

Lesson 2: Jeem, Haa, Khaa

Lesson 3: Daal, Thaal

Lesson 4: Raa, Zay

Lesson 5: Seen, Sheen

Lesson 6: Saad, Daad

Lesson 7: Taw, Thaw

Lesson 8: Ein, Ghein

Lesson 9: Faa, Qaaf

Lesson 11: Meem, Noon

Lesson 12: Haa, Wow

Lesson 13: Yaa, Hamza




Lesson 1: alif, baa, taa, thaa

After discussing that student will learn the letters of the Arabic alphabet , the Quraan is written in Arabic, etc:

  1. Opening

Looking at Alphabet Reciting Chart, point to each letter of the alphabet, in order, and say its name while student looks on.

  1. Review of past letters


  1. New letter introduction

alif, baa, taa, thaa

  1. Write the letters alif, baa, taa, thaa on the board or paper in order, saying the names as you write them.
  2. Point to the letters and say them a few more times
  3. Now, have student pronounce the letters. Be sure to watch student’s mouth as sometimes the word may sound correct, but student is really saying something different. Repeat a few times to make sure the pronunciation is clear.

  1. Using generic gameboard , write each of the following sequences in their own spaces on the board. Say the names as you write them and have student watch

Sequences, one per square:

Start at right side of game board and write the letters from right to left:

alif alif alif

baa alif alif

baa baa alif

alif alif baa

taa taa taa

thaa taa taa

thaa thaa taa

alif baa taa

alif baa thaa

  1. Let student read through the drills on the board from start to finish. Repeat a few times if student shows interest.
  1. Enrichment

Choose one more of the following activities as time and student’s interest allows:

1. Make large, bubble letters of each new letter and have student color in the letters

2. Take the colored in bubble letters and make a puzzle of each letter. Student must put the puzzle pieces together to recreate each letter. (eg. Cut baa into three pieces (left, middle, right).

3. Writing: Show student how to properly form each letter in writing and have student write the letter (see TJ Dotted letter alphabet tracing pages) or have student write in air, sand, etc.

4. Provide a worksheet where student must circle all baas in a row, all taas in the next row, etc.

5. You can also do a craft related to a word that starts with one or more of the new letters.

Lessons 2 –14 are scheduled to post one per day, until they are all posted, insha Allah…

If you use them, please let me know how you find them. Insha Allah, I hope to actually provide resources such as worksheets, coloring activities to go along with it, but for now, I needed something basic that I could follow with little preparation………..
